TOMMASI ARE IN CHIANTI CLASSICO
A partnership agreement has been sealed with Fattoria La Massa, iconic producer of Panzano in Chianti
The sealed agreement ratifies the entry of Tommasi Family Estates, the historic producer in the Valpolicella Classica zone, in the region of Chianti Classico.
The Tommasis are in fact now officially partners and co-owners in the Fattoria La Massa estate, together with its founder Giampaolo Motta and Ermen Minari, a businessman in the field of automated logistics.

«We have known Giampaolo Motta for several years and we have always harbored profound esteem and respect for what he has succeeded in accomplishing so far at Fattoria La Massa» states Dario Tommasi, President of Tommasi Family Estates. «With this operation on our part, we guarantee the possibility of more substantial investment, especially in the vineyards, with new plantings of particular clones on which Giampaolo Motta has himself already carried out detailed research. Our sales structure and organization will also allow us to enlarge Fattoria La Massa’s markets and so export the estate’s wines and philosophy all over the world».

Fattoria La Massa was created in 1992, thanks to the passion of Giampaolo Motta who, after holding various positions in France and in wine producing companies in Chianti Classico, wanted to transform his dream into reality: to transplant the vinification techniques of  Bordeaux into Tuscany in order to produce wines of world class.

The estate covers 45 hectares, of which 27 are under vines, in the Conca d’Oro cru of Panzano in Chianti. The vineyards lie at an average altitude of 360 meters above sea level. Of the 27 hectares of vineyards, planted with Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Alicante Bouschet and Petit Verdot, 18 have an average age of between 25 and 30 years, while the other 9 hectares have been planted in the last 5 years.

The winery building was designed by the Mazières architects’ studio (also responsible for the wineries of Châteaux Latour, Pétrus and Mouton Rothschild). It covers an area of approximately 2,200 square meters, is equipped with state-of-the-art plant and represents a rational, modern technological layout for the processes of vinification and maturation of wines, Fattoria La Massa produces 140,000 bottles a year, with an overall turnover of around 1,300,000 Euros.
The I.G.T. La Massa expresses the philosophy and personality of the estate to the full; Carla 6 is a 100% Sangiovese, while Giorgio Primo is the estate’s flagship wine, a blend made up of hand-selected grapes. Years of soil analysis, accompanied by careful sensory analysis of the grapes and wines, have allowed the estate to identify the best vineyard sites for the production of Giorgio Primo, which represents Fattoria La Massa’s utmost expression of the local terroir and can match the great aristocratic reds of Italy and France in terms of fame and accolades.

With the shareholding in La Massa, Tommasi’s Tuscan project has been developed yet further. It began in 1997 with Poggio al Tufo at Pitigliano and Scansano in the Tuscan Maremma, and carried on in 2015 with the acquisition at Montalcino of Podere Casisano, devoted to the exclusive production of Brunello.
With La Massa, the Tommasi family now has almost 200 hectares under vine in Tuscany, thus confirming Tommasi Family Estates as one of the most solid, well-established businesses in the Italian wine-producing industry.
The Tommasi family manages their various properties in person, making innovative and courageous choices that nevertheless maintain unaltered their respect for tradition, terroir and the individual brand’s identity.
