And Amarone lovers should know the 2016 Tommasi Amarone della Valpolicella Classico DOCG from the Veneto (Vintages Essential 356220 $49.95) is now always available. This dark, generous wine slips in with silky richness and fans out with fresh fruit — berries and figs, plums and sultanas — as well as finer brush strokes of toasted hazelnut, white pepper and bittersweet chocolate. Much going on in this tightly-wound, well-made wine. This big, bold red works well with grilled steak or grilled portobello mushrooms. Score: 93
