Tommasi: wine hospitality is online

The Tommasi family's welcome is now complete throughout Italy. Experiences in the cellars, the farmhouse, the hotels, and the restaurant can be easily booked online at Tommasi Wine Hospitality. Tommasi hospitality becomes accessible to everyone with a click.

Digitalization is a tool available to the world of wine and wine tourism as an opportunity for openness and growth. The Tommasi family has decided to embrace the trend. From any device, future guests can organize and book visits and tastings online at the historic estates in Valpolicella, Montalcino in Tuscany, and Barile in Basilicata. The Casisano and Paternoster wineries are new additions to the Tommasi Family Estate wine visits and tastings.

All this is possible thanks to the new Tommasi Wine Hospitality portal. The platform includes all of the Tommasi family’s hospitality venues: Villa Quaranta Tommasi Wine Hotel & Spa with the Borgo Antico restaurant and the Valpolicella thermal baths, the Mazzanti Hotel and the Caffè Dante Bistrot in the center of Verona; the Poggio al Tufo farmhouse in Pitigliano, in the heart of the Tuscan Maremma.

“Hospitality has always been part of the DNA and history of the Tommasi family. Seeing visitors again in the cellars and at our accommodation facilities is a great satisfaction – explains Pierangelo Tommasi – A return and a rediscovery for Italian tourists (about 60%) and foreign tourists (40%), who mostly arrive from Europe. First are Germany, Switzerland, Holland, Belgium, Scandinavia, and the United Kingdom. These are countries where consumers have known Tommasi wines for some time and who, finally, can return to visit the territories where the product comes to life. The new online portal stems from the desire to bring the public closer by creating easier access to all the different initiatives we organize at our estates.”

«We are delighted to witness a return to the same enthusiasm and the same numbers as 2019. If the current visitor trend continues, our forecast should allow us to close 2022 with significant growth. – continues Michela Tommasi – We are confident that this ferment will continue until the end of the year, thanks in part to the new portal that will allow us to offer better service and accurately monitor the flows and stays in our facilities.”

Each online proposal is designed to discover wine in all its facets, especially for wine enthusiasts or those new to the world of wine. The offerings range from tastings, cooking classes, and e-bike tours through Valpolicella vineyards at the Tommasi winery. “Spa & Wine” treatments are available, a real immersion into the grape as an ingredient for the well-being of body and mind, just like it happens at Terme della Valpolicella, the Thermal spa facility at Villa Quaranta.

“Villa Quaranta was the first Hospitality project, among the first in Italy for the trait union that it was able to create between hospitality and wine – explains Barbara Tommasi – it was the end of the 1980s when it was pioneering to talk about hospitality linked to wine. This business model has been a market benchmark that we are now extending to the other estates in Italy that we are proud to represent.”

Tommasi Family Estates speaks more and more of Italy.

Through the website, experiences at Casisano, the Tuscan estate in Montalcino, which recently opened to the public, and at Paternoster, in Vulture, the land of Aglianico, can also be booked.

The creation of the Tommasi Wine Hospitality portal was the natural result of the Tommasi family’s ongoing commitment to wine tourism, the perfect starting point to accompany wine lovers, customers, and those simply curious on a real journey into the world of Italian wine. To become increasingly responsive and digital was a challenge Tommasi took head-on to offer a service as tailored as possible for each customer.

TOMMASI FAMILY ESTATES

A family and a group that work for the present and the future of Italian wine. Tommasi represents the history of Valpolicella and beyond. With eight wine estates in seven regions – Tommasi in Veneto, Tenuta di Caseo in Lombardy, Casisano in Montalcino and Poggio al Tufo in Maremma Tuscany, Masseria Surani in Puglia, Paternoster in Basilicata, a project in Umbria ready in 2023, the acquisition of an estate on Etna in Sicily in 2022 and a partnership in Chianti Classico with La Massa – the group aims to create great wines, enhancing every single territory.

The picture is completed by the cultural and wine-growing project De Buris, linked to the Valpolicella Classica area, the recovery of Villa De Buris and the Amarone Classico DOC Riserva.

Four generations of pioneers, explorers, precursors and above all visionaries, attentive to the value of quality in every production phase, respectful of traditional procedures but open to experimentation. With the unique experience and knowledge cultivated and preserved over time, the Tommasi family intends to enhance each territory, binding itself to a path of sustainability and hospitality.

The care for hospitality is expressed through the structures of Villa Quaranta Wine Hotel & SPA in Valpolicella, Albergo Mazzanti and Caffè Dante Bistrot in Verona and Agriturismo Poggio al Tufo in Pitigliano, Maremma Tuscany.

Pierangelo Tommasi is now at the helm of Le Famiglie Storiche

The "Famiglie Storiche" elect the new president of the association and that of the Antica Bottega del Vino

Pierangelo Tommasi is now at the helm of Le Famiglie Storiche, taking over from Alberto Zenato, who has concluded his three-year term as President. At the same time, Sabrina Tedeschi has been elected to head up the Antica Bottega del Vino, following on from Tiziano Castagnedi.

Verona, 3rd June 2022

Pierangelo Tommasi is the new President of “Le Famiglie Storiche”. After three years as head of the group, Alberto Zenato has handed over to Pierangelo Tommasi (of the company named after his family) the baton of leadership of the Association that was founded in 2009 and that now includes thirteen historic producers of Amarone (Allegrini, Begali, Brigaldara, Guerrieri Rizzardi, Masi, Musella, Speri, Tedeschi, Tenuta Sant’Antonio, Tommasi, Torre d’Orti, Venturini and Zenato). Tommasi will have as his vice-presidents  Giuseppe Rizzardi of the Guerrieri Rizzardi company and Luca Speri of the Speri firm, with Alberto Zenato and Marilisa Allegrini as members of the Board.

The choice of Pierangelo Tommasi represents a natural succession within the association, which envisages the alternation of the Families in the positions of President and Vice-President: this too reflects the fact that we are a united and cohesive group, each with our own style, but with the same philosophy of production in common

says the outgoing President, Alberto Zenato, who himself succeeded from past-presidents Sandro Boscaini, Marilisa Allegrini and Sabrina Tedeschi.

Pierangelo Tommasi takes over an association that is extremely dynamic – its activities did not even come to a halt during the pandemic – and it is already preparing to face up to an autumn full of events both in Italy and abroad.

“I thank Alberto Zenato for having carried forward so admirably the work and the activities of the Association at a moment in history more difficult than any other our generation has lived through. I am honored to preside over this group of esteemed colleagues and friends – historic companies and custodians of our terroir – and continue following the course that was begun thirteen years ago, with the aim of bearing witness to the values we share, as well as those of a denomination unlike any other in the world. We shall do so with lots of activities in Italy and abroad, developing incoming towards our companies and networking with other entities in our region”.

At the same time as the election of the President of Le Famiglie Storiche, there also took place that for the executive management (also for a three-year period) of the Antica Bottega del Vino which, since 2010, has been the property of Le Famiglie Storiche. This restaurant boasts roots that go as far back as the sixteenth century, and still remains today –  thanks to its history, its menu of typical Veneto dishes, and its extraordinary wine list – a point of reference for the city of Verona and for Italy, as well as being famous all over the world.
The new President is Maria Sabrina Tedeschi, who succeeds from Tiziano Castagnedi, who was in charge for the three previous years. Francesco Allegrini will be her Vice-President, and  Giacomo Boscaini and Antonio Cesari will be counsellors.

Pierangelo Tommasi – President of Le Famiglie Storiche

Pierangelo Tommasi is one of the nine members of the fourth generation of the Tommasi family, which today runs the Tommasi Family Estates.

Having finished his studies, Pierangelo immediately began working full time in the company, performing various roles, from warehouseman to coordinator of tours and tastings for foreign visitors to the winery, before taking charge of foreign markets. The experience he gained (not only as Export Director), but also the fact of being involved in different departments of the company, including new acquisitions and strategies for development, led to his becoming today Executive Director of the family’s  group.

Pierangelo inherited a passion for wine from his father and his uncles, with whom he visited the vineyards since he was a boy, taking part in the harvests and absorbing the virtues of rigor and loyalty.

Pierangelo is happily married, with two children and a dog, and – apart from wine – he has a great love for soccer, both as a player and a fan.

Maria Sabrina Tedeschi – President of the Antica Bottega del Vino

Maria Sabrina Tedeschi graduated from the State University in Milan in Food Science and Technology, and during her course she did an internship at the University of Enology at Dijon (in Burgundy in France).

After her studies, she worked as a teacher of enology and researcher at the Mach Foundation at San Michele all’Adige (near Trento).

Subsequently, her passion for her region and her desire to develop her family company (Società Agricola F.lli Tedeschi) prevailed and so, in 2000, she returned to Valpolicella to work alongside her siblings Riccardo and Antonietta and her father Lorenzo.

Today , she is in charge of the company’s Marketing and Communications department, as well as looking after the export market in the countries of Europe, the East and Far-East.

In the period 2016-2019 she was President of Le Famiglie Storiche. She is a member of the Le Donne del Vino Association.

Le Famiglie Storiche is the Association created in June 2009 by the union of 10 historic producers in the Valpolicella region. Today it includes 13 members, all of which are prestigious wineries that have been active ambassadors for several generations of “the world of Amarone”: Allegrini, Begali, Brigaldara, Guerrieri Rizzardi, Masi, Musella, Speri, Tedeschi, Tenuta Sant’Antonio, Tommasi, Torre D’Orti, Venturini and Zenato.

These Families, who together bring to fruition a heritage consolidated by each of them over the course of time, as well as a constant commitment to quality in promoting the exceptional wine that goes by the name of Amarone, all have their roots in the fundamental values of history and craftsmanship, expressed in a whole host of different ways. Their efforts are aimed at making known and safeguarding not only their wines, but also one of Italy’s most strategic wine production zones, Valpolicella.

Le Famiglie Storiche represent:

History: they have belonged to the world of Valpolicella for a great many years and they are deeply rooted in it.

Passion: more than just vine-growers, they are custodians of their terroir.

A Project: the Association was created with the precise goal of bearing witness to the values of a region and a denomination that have no equal anywhere in the world.

96 | DE BURIS AMARONE DELLA VALPOLICELLA CLASSICO DOCG RISERVA 2010

The 2010 Amarone della Valpolicella Riserva De Buris pulls you close with an intense and spicy mix of sour citrus, tart cherries, dusty rose and dark, dark chocolate. I like the lift here, coming across as intensely oral and with an herbal twang that balances its rich fruits. This is silky yet vertical, as cooling acids add balance, saturating the palate with intense spice while becoming quite oral and mineral toward the close. It’s youthfully dense and with amazing potential, leaving the palate coated in ne tannins, nearly silty, along with hints of licorice and bitter spice. The 2010 is simply gorgeous, and with the potential to go two to three decades or more.

95 | AMARONE DELLA VALPOLICELLA CLASSICO RISERVA CA’ FLORIAN 2013

Masses of crushed cherries, dried florals, cinnamon, clove and stone dust creates a seductive bouquet as the 2013 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva Ca’ Florian blossoms in the glass. It’s velvety and elegant with masses of dark red fruits and inner spice complicated by intense minerality and fine tannins that slowly saturate. It leaves lavender, licorice and dark, dark chocolate through the finale. This is structured and cool-toned.
Wow, the 2013 is an intense Ca’ Florian for the cellar.

92 | AMARONE DELLA VALPOLICELLA CLASSICO 2017

The 2017 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico opens with a minty freshness, as bright red berries and dusty drieds flowers form in the glass. This is silky and saline in character, with depths of dark red fruits and spices all energized by saline-infused acidity, making for a highly drinkable expression as it develops inner rose tones toward the close. It’s structured and staining with a bitter twang of dark fruits and savory herbs. While you can still drink this today, the best is yet to come. A strapping and deep Amarone.

Giancarlo Tommasi, oenologist

91 | VALPOLICELLA CLASSICO SUPERIORE RAFAEL 2019

More savory than sweet and with wild herbs, tomato leaf, crushed ashen stone and hints of lavender fill the glass as the 2019 Rafael Valpolicella Classico Superiore blossoms. This is silky yet juicy and remarkably fresh with mineral-tinged cherries and a bitter tinge of spice. It finishes long and spicy with depths of minerality and a coating of dark fruits and exotic spices. Salty, intense and at 12%, the 2019 Rafael is a gorgeous and characterful Valpolicella Classico.

90 | LUGANA RISERVA LE FORNACI 2018

The 2018 Lugana Riserva Le Fornaci opens slowly, as an enticing bouquet of crushed rocks, green apples and exotic flowers forms in the glass. It’s silky in texture with medium-bodied weight, displaying an almost-oily sensation, with citrus-tinged orchard fruits and inner florals that arch across the palate. Brisk acids maintain amazing freshness and precision throughout, as the 2018 tapers off both long yet incredibly fresh, with a note of chlorophyll that is hard to describe, yet completely satisfying. I’m tempted to see what a year or two of cellaring might reveal here.

Tommasi Lands in Sicily and Climbs Mount Etna

The historic family of Amarone fame celebrates its 120th anniversary
with the announcement of an exciting new investment in 15 hectares
located in the Etna Rosso and Etna Bianco denominations

The latest investment of Tommasi Family Estates, which this year celebrates its 120th anniversary, is a winery that was founded in the early 20th century on the slopes of Mount Etna. It is located at 570 meters above sea level in the small town of Linguaglossa in the Etna Natural Park, a few kilometers from Taormina.

The estate covers 15 hectares planted to Nerello Mascalese and Carricante grapes respectively for the production of Etna Rosso DOC and Etna Bianco DOC. It is nestled within the breathtaking natural beauty of this part of Sicily, which includes views of the sea and a huge natural formation of lava stone named Pietracannone. There is also a 1,500 square-meter large cellar facility on the property for winemaking and aging. The Tommasi family has yet to give a name to this new property.

«For 120 years we have had the ambitious goal of telling the story of Italy through its winemaking heritage and we are therefore proud to be considered among the best Italian wine ambassadors,” says Executive Director Pierangelo Tommasi. “Today, Etna represents one of the most interesting and exciting wine territories both from a production and business point of view. We are proud to be able to add this appellation to our portfolio with the others that we already represent, such as Valpolicella Classica, Lugana, Montalcino, Vulture in Basilicata and Manduria in Puglia.»

The agreement was signed with the Bambara-De Luca family, historical hoteliers in Taormina. «We have known the Tommasi family for quite some time and we appreciate their family union, combined with industriousness and expertise. These skills allow them to reach objectives beyond the classic Valpolicella area. The Tommasi family has also always had a vocation for the hospitality business, another important point we have in common,” says the Bambara-De Luca family. We immediately found ourselves on the same wavelength, with a common vision of enhancing the territory and its riches. I am sure this collaboration will give further prestige to the Etna region and to wine tourism in the area.»

With this latest acquisition, the Tommasi family now owns a total of 780 hectares of vineyards throughout Italy. Theirs is the story of a great Italian wine family inspired by the pioneering spirit of expert, visionary farmers – as the current generation’s relatives were – to constantly move forward with great dedication, pragmatics, style, and a penchant for experimentation.
